Book & Film Club – A Single Man

The Book
A Single Man is a 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood.
It follows a day in the life of George Falconer, a middle-aged English professor living in Southern California and grieving the sudden death of his partner, Jim. The novel explores isolation, desire, memory, and the small moments of connection that make life bearable, all compressed into a single, luminous day.
The university is a possible allusion to CSULA, where Isherwood taught for some time. The novel is also believed to be informed by a crisis in his relationship with Don Bachardy.
The Film
The directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford, the film stars Colin Firth, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of George Falconer, a depressed gay British university professor living in Southern California in 1962.
The film premiered on September 11, 2009, at the 66th Venice International Film Festival, where Firth won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor, and went on the film festival circuit.
