Film & Book Club – The 39 Steps

Each month we will take a book that has an interesting film adaptation and spend the evening comparing the two. The ticket price includes a copy of the book (which can be collected from our Abergavenny bookshop once you’ve booked your place) and the film screening.
August’s pick is…The 39 Steps by John Buchan.
About the book
‘My guest was lying sprawled on his back. There was a long knife through his heart which skewered him to the floor’. Richard Hannay has just returned to England after years in South Africa and is thoroughly bored with his life in London. But then a murder is committed in his flat, just days after a chance encounter with an American who had told him about an assassination plot which could have dire international consequences. An obvious suspect for the police and an easy target for the killers, Hannay goes on the run in his native Scotland where he will need all his courage and ingenuity to stay one step ahead of his pursuers.
Film >>> The 39 Steps is a 1959 British thriller directed by Ralph Thomas and starring Kenneth More and Taina Elg. A remake of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, it was the first colour version of the Buchan tale and unlike the mainly studio-based original, it features extensive location shooting.
