Book & Film Club – 1984

March 30 @ 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
£10.00

The Book

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by George Orwell, published in 1949. Set in a future where Great Britain—now “Airstrip One”—is part of the totalitarian superstate Oceania, the story portrays a society under constant surveillance, ruled by Big Brother and enforced by the Thought Police. Through the Ministry of Truth, the Party manipulates information, rewrites history, and suppresses individuality. Orwell described the book as a satire and a warning about the dangers of centralised power and the distortion of truth. The novel has become a classic, contributing terms like “Big Brother”, “Newspeak”, “doublethink”, and “Thought Police” to common language.

The Film

Written and directed by Michael Radford, based upon George Orwell’s novel of the same name. Starring John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton and Cyril Cusack, Nineteen Eighty-Four was Burton’s last screen appearance; it was released two months after his death and is dedicated to him.
