Book & Film Club – The Zone of Interest

April 27 @ 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
£10.00

Each month we  take a book that has an interesting film adaptation and spend the evening comparing the two. The ticket price includes a copy of the book (which can be collected from our Abergavenny bookshop once you’ve booked your place) and the film screening at The Kings Arms.

The book
The Zone of Interest by Martin Amis is a chilling, darkly satirical novel set in and around Auschwitz, told through the shifting perspectives of those who live and work beside the camp. By focusing not on the victims but on the perpetrators and bystanders, Amis exposes the moral contortions, banality, and self-deception that allow unimaginable atrocities to coexist with ordinary domestic life.

The film
Jonathan Glazer’s film adaptation takes a starkly different approach, stripping the story back to an almost clinical minimalism. The Zone of Interest (2023) observes the everyday lives of a Nazi commandant and his family living next door to Auschwitz, with the horrors of the camp remaining largely unseen but constantly heard. The result is an unsettling, immersive film that forces the viewer to confront how evil can exist quietly, comfortably, and disturbingly close to normality.
