SUMMARY:Book & Film Club - 1984
DESCRIPTION:The Book \nNineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by George Orwell\, published in 1949. Set in a future where Great Britain—now “Airstrip One”—is part of the totalitarian superstate Oceania\, the story portrays a society under constant surveillance\, ruled by Big Brother and enforced by the Thought Police. Through the Ministry of Truth\, the Party manipulates information\, rewrites history\, and suppresses individuality. Orwell described the book as a satire and a warning about the dangers of centralised power and the distortion of truth. The novel has become a classic\, contributing terms like “Big Brother”\, “Newspeak”\, “doublethink”\, and “Thought Police” to common language. \nThe Film \nWritten and directed by Michael Radford\, based upon George Orwell’s novel of the same name. Starring John Hurt\, Richard Burton\, Suzanna Hamilton and Cyril Cusack\, Nineteen Eighty-Four was Burton’s last screen appearance; it was released two months after his death and is dedicated to him.

SUMMARY:Film & Book Club - Flowers for Algernon
DESCRIPTION:Considered one of the all time classic science fiction stories (256pp)\, it is a heart-wrenching tale which transcends the genre. Have tissues at hand as it is emotional! There are three adaptations which were all well received by critics but we will be showing the first adaptation (1968) entitled ‘Charly’\, which won a Best Actor Oscar for its lead\, Cliff Robertson. \nThe Book \nCharlie Gordon\, IQ 68\, is a floor sweeper and the gentle butt of everyone’s jokes – until an experiment in the enhancement of human intelligence turns him into a genius. But then Algernon\, the mouse whose triumphal experimental transformation preceded his\, fades and dies\, and Charlie has to face the possibility that his salvation was only temporary. Winner of the 1960 Hugo Award for Best Short Story\, and subsequently expanded into a Hugo-nominated novel\, Flowers for Algernon earned Daniel Keyes the honour of SFWA Author Emeritus in 2000 for his contribution to Science Fiction and Fantasy. \n‘Heartbreaking and beautiful. Required reading\, as far as I am concerned’ – Wil Wheaton’A masterpiece of poignant brilliance . . \n. heartbreaking\, and utterly\, completely brilliant’ – The Guardian’Excellent . . \n. extremely moving’ – The Encyclopedia of Science FictionWelcome to The Best Of The Masterworks: a selection of the finest in science fiction \nThe Film \nCliff Robertson earned an Academy Award for playing the title role based on the novel by Daniel Keyes entitled “Flowers for Algernon.” His portrayal is heartbreaking and you can’t help but feel for the character who is the butt of so many jokes by his so-called colleagues and friends at his workplace\, a bakery. Seinfeld’s Barney Martin and Dick Van Patten play his co-workers. The divine Claire Bloom (who should be made a Dame) is the sympathetic attractive teacher. Ruth White plays the landlady in one of the last film roles before her death in 1969 from cancer. The setting is filmed on location in Boston\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Book & Film Club - The Hound of the Baskervilles
DESCRIPTION:The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The classic Sherlock Holmes tale (208pp) for Halloween. The movie is most likely the 1939 Basil Rathbone (surely the best Sherlock?) \nThe Book \nThe Penguin English Library Edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle”Mr Holmes\, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!”The terrible spectacle of the beast\, the fog of the moor\, the discovery of a body: this classic horror story pits detective against dog\, rationalism against the supernatural\, good against evil. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby\, the blame is placed on a family curse. It is left to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to solve the mystery of the legend of the phantom hound before Sir Charles’ heir comes to an equally gruesome end. \nThe Hound of the Baskervilles gripped readers when it was first serialised and has continued to hold its place in the popular imagination. The Penguin English Library – 100 editions of the best fiction in English\, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War. \nThe Film \nSir Arthur Conan Doyle’s best loved Sherlock Holmes work\, The Hound of the Baskervilles\, gets a beautifully photographed presentation on the screen by director Sidney Lanfield. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce team in their first Holmes film as the world’s original reasoning detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson. Sir Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene) returns from abroad to take up residence in the family estate on the eerie moors in west England. But the foggy landscape appears to be haunted by an invisible creature with demonic powers bent on destroying Sir Henry. Holmes must use all his powers of deduction to solve the case. Although other actors have played Holmes and Watson\, Rathbone and Bruce are the undisputed kings. Rathbone brings his rapier profile and fiery intensity to Holmes and Bruce plays Watson like an adoring and faithful puppy dog. They made other adaptations of Holmes together but The Hound of the Baskervilles is the strongest Conan Doyle story and makes for the best movie in the Holmes series. \n

DESCRIPTION:Each month we will take a book that has an interesting film adaptation and spend the evening comparing the two. The ticket price includes a copy of the book (which can be collected from our Abergavenny bookshop once you’ve booked your place) and the film screening. \nAugust’s pick is…The 39 Steps by John Buchan. \nAbout the book\n‘My guest was lying sprawled on his back. SUMMARY:An evening with...John Niven and James Dean Bradfield
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome John Niven back to Abergavenny in celebration of his new novel\, The Fathers. John will be in conversation with James Dean Bradfield of The Manic Street Preachers. \nScalpel-sharp yet laced with compassion\, this wry look at modern fatherhood finds the lives of two very different dads brought together by tragedy. \nJohn joins us to discuss his work with a special guest…. James Dean Bradfield lead vocalist of Manic Street Preachers. The event includes and audience Q&A\, followed by a signing. \nAbout The Fathers\nIn a busy maternity ward\, first-time father Dan meets Jada\, a dad welcoming his fifth – no\, sixth? child into the world. Dan and Jada come from very different places: both called Glasgow. Dan is a successful TV writer with a townhouse in the West End and a shiny Tesla ready to drive his wife and baby home. Jada is a\, small-time criminal who is already planning how to separate Dan from some of the luxuries Jada has never been able to enjoy in his tiny flat in a Brutalist sixties council block. \nBoth men find that the birth of their sons has fired their ambitions. Dan plans to walk away from his saccharine TV success and finally knuckle down to writing that novel. While\, for Jada\, it’s the opportunity for one last get-rich-quick scheme – ripping off a local airport. When tragedy occurs\, their worlds are brought closer than either could have imagined – close enough that it could mean destruction for both of them. \nAbout the author\nJOHN NIVEN is the author of eleven novels\, including Kill Your Friends\, The Second Coming and Straight White Male. He has written a memoir\, O Brother\, and as a screenwriter his credits include The Trip\, Kill Your Friends and How to Build a Girl.
