SUMMARY:An evening with ... Zakia Sewell
DESCRIPTION:In this hopeful quest for a new sense of national identity that unifies rather than divides\, Zakia Sewell explores folk rituals\, myths and traditions throughout the British isles\, from Morris dancing to the Notting Hill Carnival. \n‘I’ve been waiting for a book like this’ – Florence Welch \nAbout Zakia Sewell\nJoin us in conversation with Zakia Sewell. Zakia Sewell is a writer\, DJ and broadcaster based in London. She hosts Dream Time on BBC Radio 6 Music\, and used to host the flagship breakfast show on NTS Radio. For the past eight years she has been producing and presenting radio documentaries and podcasts for platforms such as BBC Radio 3 and 4\, Tate and Camden Arts Centre. Her acclaimed four-part Radio 4 series My Albion was an inspiration for her book. Her writing has appeared in publications including Tate Etc.\, Resident Advisor and Weird Walk as well as in the essay collection This Woman’s Work. \nAbout Finding Albion: Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain \nZakia Sewell is on a quest for another Britain. Traversing the length and breadth of our island from Somerset to Scotland\, she’s seeking out a different story – one that lies beyond divisive national myths and symbols. In Finding Albion\, Zakia uncovers an alternative spirit of Britain that is vividly alive today. It is found in otherworldly folk songs\, ancient legends\, Celtic seasonal rites and mystic stone circles that punctuate our landscape. Her journey begins as the sun rises on the spring equinox over Glastonbury Tor\, where she meets neopagans reclaiming traditions from our pre-Christian past. At summer’s peak at Notting Hill Carnival she hears cultural echoes that passed along the slave trade routes from the Caribbean. On All Hallow’s Eve she encounters the ghosts of Empire that are still haunting the nation\, and in the depths of a Cornish winter she asks if today’s new folk revival could unite our increasingly divided country? Finding Albion brings a hopeful story of Britain out from the shadows\, giving us a deeper sense of who we are\, and heralding the promise of a brighter future. \n\nJoin us to find out something new about old lands. \n\n\nEvent Format:\nAuthor talk ‘in conversation’\, followed by audience Q&A and book signing. \nTickets:\n£10 without book or £28 with book \nVenue:\nThe Loft at Bookish is located in our flagship store in Crickhowell\, accessed from Silver Lane.\nPlease let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements. \nRefunds:\nIt is our general policy not to refund event tickets unless an event has sold out. Maya Jordan’s ambition and resilience was born in the library and nourished by the Open University – through poverty\, early motherhood\, precarious housing\, caring responsibilities and chronic disability – to a point where she finally seized her right to write. \n‘Funny as hell and full of fight. Maya’s voice is the real deal’ Daisy May Cooper. \n‘Her name is Maya Jordan. She is a noisy woman and we should fear her’ Michael Sheen

SUMMARY:Wine & Crime with...Tim Weaver
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Crickhowell for an evening with bestselling author Tim Weaver\, in conversation with Alis Hawkins\, as he discusses his gripping new thriller The Lost Women — the 15th novel in the much-loved David Raker series. \nOnce a journalist\, now a missing persons investigator\, Raker is haunted by a case from eighteen years ago\, when three women vanished while filming a documentary on the Cornish coast. Today\, he’s drawn into another impossible mystery: a man survives facial surgery after a car accident — but when the bandages come off\, his wife realises he is not her husband. \nAs the two cases collide\, Raker and former detective Colm Healy race against the clock\, with just 48 hours to uncover the truth before everything they love is put at risk. \nMarking 15 years of David Raker novels\, Tim Weaver will also talk about sustaining a long-running crime series\, how the genre has evolved\, and how he keeps his stories fresh and thrilling. \nAn unmissable event for crime fiction fans.

SUMMARY:An evening with... Jennie Godfrey
DESCRIPTION:We can’t wait to welcome Book-ish favourite\, Jennie Godfrey\, to talk about her new book The Barbecue at No. 9. Her debut novel The List of Suspicious Things was a No 1 Sunday Times bestseller and one of our own top staff picks. This is going to be a fabulous evening and we hope you can join us! \nAbout The Barbecue at No. 9\n It’s the summer of 1985 and the residents of Delmont Close are preparing a neighbourhood barbecue to watch the biggest music event in history: Live Aid. A day like no other that will end having reached millions and changing the lives of all who attend. House-proud Lydia Gordon\, whose idols are Princess Di and Delia Smith\, is determined to put on a show that will impress everyone – with her posh garden and state-of-the-art television\, and her sweet husband and two children\, Hanna and David. But as the guests flood into number nine\, so do all of the secrets that have been kept in the close. Rita\, a new neighbour from Australia\, is hoping for a fresh start but harbours a shocking event in her past; Steve\, a young Falklands veteran\, battles his own demons; and Mr Wilson is surely too good-looking to ever be trusted. But as the hours count down to the last performance of the night\, it’s Lydia who faces the heart-breaking truth that her immaculate home and flawless family might not be so perfect after all. And if each of their neighbours is guilty of hiding something\, so are the Gordons at number nine… \n\n\n\nEvent Format:\nAuthor talk ‘in conversation’\, followed by audience Q&A and book signing. \nTickets:\n£15 without book or £25 with book \nVenue:\nThe Loft at Bookish is located in our flagship store in Crickhowell\, accessed from Silver Lane.\nPlease let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements. \nRefunds:\nIt is our general policy not to refund event tickets unless an event has sold out. SUMMARY:An evening with...Sebastian Faulks *DATE CHANGE*
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with bestselling novelist Sebastian Faulks as he talks about his new memoir Fires Which Burned Brightly with Dr Anne Rowe \n‘The only dividend of the years’ vanishing\, as far as I can see\, is that it makes aspects of the past appear more interesting or humorous than they felt at the time.’ \nIn Fires Which Burned Brightly\, Faulks\, a reluctant memoirist\, offers readers a series of detailed snapshots from a life in progress. They include a post-war rural childhood – ‘cold mutton and wet washing on a rack over the range’ – the booze-sodden heyday of Fleet Street and a career as one of the country’s most acclaimed novelists. \nThere are not one\, but two daring escapes from boarding school; the delirium of a jetlagged American book tour; the writing of Birdsong in his brother’s house in 1992; and memorable trips across the channel to France. Politics\, psychiatry and frustrated ventures into the world of entertainment are analysed with patience and rueful humour. \nThe book is driven by a desire ‘to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.’ It ends with a tribute to Faulks’s parents and a sense of how his own generation was shaped by the disruptive power of war and its aftermath. Sharply perceptive and alive with a generous wit\, Fires Which Burned Brightly is a work of subtle yet profound intelligence and warmth. \nWe’re delighted to be hosting this event with Sebastian Faulks\, one of the nation’s finest novelists\, and look forward to welcoming him to Abergavenny to celebrate the publication of Fires Which Burned Brightly. \nEvent Format: \nAuthor talk ‘in conversation’ followed by audience Q&A and book signing \nTickets: \n£15 without book  or £25 with book \nVenue: \nThe Angel Hotel is located in the centre of Abergavenny. A tender\, wise and quietly devastating book.” Peter Frankopan \nLyse is the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent and has led BBC coverage of events ranging from the Arab Spring to the Sudanese Civil War. She first arrived at the Kabul Inter-Continental Hotel on Christmas Day 1988\, the day after her 30th birthday. A junior BBC reporter\, she was there to cover the withdrawal of Soviet troops following their decade-long occupation of Afghanistan. \nShe still visits whenever she is in Afghanistan. She counts many of its staff and fellow guests her close friends and here\, for the first time\, she tells their stories. \nWhen the Inter-Continental Kabul opened in 1969\, Afghanistan’s first luxury hotel symbolised a dream of a modernising country connected to the world. \nMore than fifty years on\, the Inter-Continental is still standing. It has endured Soviet occupation\, multiple coups\, a grievous civil war\, a US invasion and the rise\, fall and rise of the Taliban. History lives within its scarred windows and walls. \nLyse Doucet uses its story to craft a richly immersive history of modern Afghanistan. The result is a remarkably vivid history of how Afghans have survived a half century of destruction and disruption. It is the story of a hotel but also the story of a people. \n“A story of a country and a people\, told with knowledge\, insight and tenderness. I’ve been waiting for a Lyse Doucet book for a long time and what she has produced here is testament to her humanity as well as her journalistic eye.” Mishal Hussain \nEvent Format: \nAuthor talk ‘in conversation’ followed by audience Q&A and book signing \nTickets: \n£15 without book  or £30 with book \nVenue: \nThe Angel Hotel is located in the centre of Abergavenny. SUMMARY:An evening with... Helen Lederer
DESCRIPTION:Not That I’m Bitter tells the story of Helen’s journey from being what her mother called a “show-off” to becoming a trailblazer in the male-dominated world of Alternative Comedy.  \nHer memoir is a mix of joy\, sadness\, hilarity and startling self-revelation – woven together with a witty narrative that delivers real punch. This is a powerful\, frank\, moving and characteristically funny memoir\, revealing exactly how choppy the waters could be. Even in those ground-breaking\, anti-Thatcher days\, there was only room at the top for so many women. For the rest\, it was as much a struggle to be seen and heard in the world of comedy as in any boardroom or workplace – and just as difficult to avoid the predators. But this is more than the story of one decade. The child of a Czech wartime refugee\, Helen was never part of the mainstream.  Her memoir is bursting with big laughs and poignant moments\, but it’s the way Helen describes her stories of absurdity\, success and failure that really has the power to connect with an audience.   \n\nWhat does it take to break into comedy when women were often seen as “high maintenance” for daring to write and send a script to the BBC? \n\n\nHow do humour and tenacity help combat lifelong struggles with weight\, self-esteem\, and anxiety? \n\n\nHow do you cope with constant self-sabotage and when\, despite enormous success\, you still feel like a failure? \n\n\nWhy were the ’80s both the best and worst of times for a woman with sharp jokes and a sharper tongue?

SUMMARY:An evening with...Callum Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with winner of the Indie Book Award 2025 for Non Fiction Callum Robinson \n‘A beautifully cut and crafted masterpiece inlaid with insight and polished with the pure joy of nature.’ – Chris Packham \nIngrained is a love letter to trees\, timber and craftsmanship – and to finding your own voice. The eldest son of a Master Woodworker\, Callum Robinson spent his childhood surrounded by wood and trees\, absorbing craft lessons in his father’s workshop\, playing amongst the sycamore\, oak and Scots pine that bordered his home. \nIn time he became his father’s apprentice\, helping to create exquisite bespoke objects. But eventually the need to find his own path led him to establish his own workshop; to chase ever bigger and more commercial projects\, to business meetings\, bright lights and bureaucracy\, to lose touch with his roots. Until the devastating loss of one major job threatened to bring it all crashing down. \nFaced with the end of his business\, his team and everything he had worked so hard to build\, he was forced to question what mattered most. Blending memoir and nature writing at its finest\, Ingrained is an uplifting meditation on the joys and challenges of working with your hands in our modern age\, on inheritance\, community\, and the beauty of the natural world. \nEvent Format: \nAuthor talk ‘in conversation’ followed by audience Q&A and book signing \nTickets: \n£10 without book or £15 with book \nVenue: \nThe Loft at Bookish is located in our flagship store in Crickhowell\, accessed from Silver Lane. \nPlease let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements. SUMMARY:An evening with... Alis Hawkins
DESCRIPTION:We can’t wait to spend the evening with CWA Dagger shortlisted author of historical crime fiction and mysteries – and Book-ish favourite – Alis Hawkins! We will be celebrating the launch of The Hunters Club\, the third book in the Oxford Mysteries series and the evening will include an audience Q&A and a book signing. \nAbout The Hunters Club\nIf you’re not with them… you’re against them. Oxford\, 1883. Young men are being found bound\, gagged and hooded at the gates of their colleges in the small hours. Basil Rice\, Jesus College fellow\, is asked by the senior proctor to investigate. But matters of sexual purity are dangerous\, as it lays Basil open to unwelcome scrutiny of his own private life. Meanwhile\, the University Vice Chancellor’s Court has wrongly imprisoned a young shopgirl from the town\, and she seeks the services of young academic and budding journalist\, Non Vaughan\, to clear her name. The uncovering by Basil of a secret society\, The Venatores\, and the murder of a student\, cause Non and Basil to join forces. But is justice possible in a world so unjust and dangerous? \n‘An excellent historical mystery dripping with atmosphere that exposes the chauvinism\, misogyny and bigotry of late Victorian England’ The Times \n‘Real figures from history rub shoulders with those invented by Hawkins – and her inventiveness is prodigal’ Financial Times‘ \nFearlessly tackles taboo attitudes of the era\, taking aim at misogyny\, homophobia\, and sexual politics. An excellent addition to the historical mystery canon. Marvellous!’ Vaseem Khan \n‘Brilliantly researched\, rich in atmosphere and with two likeable and intriguing protagonists at the centre’ Philip Gwynne Jones \nAlis Hawkins on ‘The Oxford Mysteries’ series\n“Having written five books about young men\, back to back\, (the first four Teifi Valley Coroner novels plus The Black and The White\, I decided that I wanted to write a series with a female main protagonist. My publisher suggested that I might think of setting the new series in Oxford and\, as far as I was concerned\, historical crime fiction + female protagonist means only one time – the beginning of the women’s college movement. It has everything – conflict\, seismic change\, misogyny\, female empowerment\, suffragism… and did I mention conflict? \nBut I’m a Welsh writer\, in fact I’m a founding member of Wales’s crime fiction collective\, Crime Cymru\, so I didn’t want to abandon Wales\, or the Teifi Valley. So I took the Teifi Valley with me to Oxford in the form of Rhiannon ‘Non’ Vaughan\, an intelligent\, feisty young woman who runs headlong into Oxford’s genteel middle-class respectability and refuses to conform. Non is a fiery redhead who rides around Oxford on a tandem tricycle which she won in a bet (of course she did…). \nAnd\, needing somebody to put the slightly more conventional side of the Oxford story\, I gave her a co-conspirator in the form of Basil Rice\, also Welsh but from the more anglicised Monmouthshire. Basil is\, to all intents and purposes\, an establishment figure. He’s a don at Jesus College and has impeccable middle class credentials. But Basil is not entirely what he seems because he has a very well-kept secret: he’s gay in a time when male homosexual acts were punishable by imprisonment with hard labour\, not to mention loss of all respectability. \nTogether\, Non and Basil keep getting involved with suspicious deaths. And Non navigates the tricky course she’s set herself as a female student of a university which isn’t really sure that it wants women…” \nYou can read about Non and Basil’s exploits and the Oxford of the 1880s in the first two books:\nA Bitter Remedy >>>\nThe Skeleton Army >>>

SUMMARY:*SOLD OUT* An Evening with...Mary Portas
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to welcoming Mary Portas to Abergavenny on September 29th to discuss her new book I Shop\, Therefore I Am. \nIt’s the 1990s: Britpop is dominating the charts\, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell stare out from the cover of every glossy magazine and British fashion is ripe for reinvention. Leading the charge is a twenty-something Mary Portas who has been brought in to revitalise the department store Harvey Nichols\, at the time more likely to be associated with dowagers than daring designers. With department stores in decline and an alpha male leadership team watching closely\, the pressure is immense: make it profitable and make it relevant. \nMary steps into a world she doesn’t fully understand – and at first\, it shows. But what seems like vulnerability quickly reveals itself as vision. She doesn’t rely on fitting in; she leans into instinct\, takes bold creative risks and reimagines what luxury could be. \nBy the millennium\, the store would be renowned for its outrageous\, headline-grabbing\, traffic-stopping window displays; patronage by style icon Lady Di and Bolly-swigging duo Patsy and Edina of the iconic sitcom Ab Fab – no longer fusty old Harvey Nicols but Harvey Nicks\, daaarling! I Shop\, Therefore I Am is the story of how she did it. Mary takes us behind the shop window – to the people who kept the show on the road and the early lessons that shaped her career. Told with her trademark wit\, grit and candour\, readers will see first-hand how\, armed only with the blank canvas of a shop window and her own creativity\, Mary created an era-defining global brand destination.

Old spies aren’t much better than clowns. Or so David Cartwright used to say\, but he forgot to add they can be dangerous too\, especially if they’ve fallen on hard times – as Diana Taverner learns when the past lands on her desk. An operation carried out during the height of the Troubles laid bare the ugly side of state security\, and those involved are threatening to expose details. But every threat hides an opportunity\, and the would-be blackmailer is soon being used as Taverner’s solution to a much newer problem. The O.B. himself is long buried\, and has left his library to the Spooks’ College\, where it turns out that one of the books has gone missing. Or perhaps never existed . . . River Cartwright has time to kill while waiting to be passed fit for work\, and investigating the secrets his grandfather’s library hid seems a harmless activity. But nothing involving the slow horses stays harmless for long. \nLouisa Guy is pondering her future\, but before making any big decisions\, she might as well check River’s not about to come a cropper. Shirley Dander is wondering if the new kid\, Ash Khan\, is as annoying as she seems. Roddy Ho wants the team to know that his tattoo is a hummingbird\, and not\, as Lech Wicinski claims\, a platypus. And Catherine Standish just wants everyone to play nice. \nAs far as Lamb’s concerned\, they should all be at their desks – when Taverner starts plotting mischief people get hurt\, and Lamb has no plans to send in the clowns. On the other hand\, if the clowns ignore his instructions\, any harm that befalls them is hardly his fault. \nBut they’re his clowns. And if they don’t all come home\, there’ll be a reckoning.

SUMMARY:An evening with...Kevin Rowland
DESCRIPTION:A searingly honest memoir from Dexys’ iconic frontman\, one of the great mavericks and creative geniuses of British music. \nAt home with his Irish immigrant parents in Wolverhampton\, at the beginning of the swinging sixties\, Kevin the eight-year-old altar boy was planning to attend college to train to be a priest. Elsewhere\, he was thieving\, lying\, swearing\, fighting and rarely out of trouble. \n\n\n\n\nKevin Rowland lays bare his unvarnished life story for the very first time. From the juvenile courts of his troubled teenage years to the early days of the New Romantic scene in the late ’70s and beyond\, he recounts his darkest hours\, deepest desires and greatest joys. An unwavering passion for music\, highly tuned sense of style and an unstoppable determination propelled him down a path that led to huge chart success with Dexys Midnight Runners in the early 1980s. However\, despite being celebrated as a creative genius\, Kevin was plagued by an inner turmoil\, leading to a series of ill-fated self-sabotaging events – including a serious cocaine addiction – leaving him bankrupt and adrift by the 1990s. \n“Music had kept me so busy and obsessed that it saved me from acting out in other ways\, which surely would have landed me in jail. In that way\, music saved me. Yet even with the help of music\, I came very close to prison.” \nBless Me Father unflinchingly details this turbulent coming-of-age period\, warts and all\, exploring themes of religion\, sexuality\, creativity\, cultural identity and addiction. Through long stints in rehab\, embracing self-reflection and exploring gender fluidity with his pioneering project My Beauty\, Kevin also charts his steady return to health\, sobriety and stability\, culminating in Dexys’ triumphant appearance at Glastonbury in 2024. \nTICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

SUMMARY:An evening with...John Niven and James Dean Bradfield
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome John Niven back to Abergavenny in celebration of his new novel\, The Fathers. John will be in conversation with James Dean Bradfield of The Manic Street Preachers. \nScalpel-sharp yet laced with compassion\, this wry look at modern fatherhood finds the lives of two very different dads brought together by tragedy. \nJohn joins us to discuss his work with a special guest…. James Dean Bradfield lead vocalist of Manic Street Preachers. The event includes and audience Q&A\, followed by a signing. \nAbout The Fathers\nIn a busy maternity ward\, first-time father Dan meets Jada\, a dad welcoming his fifth – no\, sixth? child into the world. Dan and Jada come from very different places: both called Glasgow. Dan is a successful TV writer with a townhouse in the West End and a shiny Tesla ready to drive his wife and baby home. Jada is a\, small-time criminal who is already planning how to separate Dan from some of the luxuries Jada has never been able to enjoy in his tiny flat in a Brutalist sixties council block. \nBoth men find that the birth of their sons has fired their ambitions. Dan plans to walk away from his saccharine TV success and finally knuckle down to writing that novel. While\, for Jada\, it’s the opportunity for one last get-rich-quick scheme – ripping off a local airport. When tragedy occurs\, their worlds are brought closer than either could have imagined – close enough that it could mean destruction for both of them. \nAbout the author\nJOHN NIVEN is the author of eleven novels\, including Kill Your Friends\, The Second Coming and Straight White Male. He has written a memoir\, O Brother\, and as a screenwriter his credits include The Trip\, Kill Your Friends and How to Build a Girl.

SUMMARY:An evening with... Jay Griffiths
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with celebrated author Jay Griffiths to discuss her book How Animals Heal Us – a unique and heartfelt insight into the healing nature of our relationship with animals. All tickets include a glass of wine or a soft drink and there will be the opportunity to get your book signed too. \nAbout How Animals Heal Us\nThis book offers the evidence that animals do heal us\, drawing widely on scientific discoveries\, history\, and Indigenous knowledge. We meet a pot-bellied pig who saved her owner’s life\, lions who guarded a girl from kidnappers\, dolphins and whales rescuing people in danger\, and dogs who can smell cancer and phone the Emergency Services. Animal sounds\, from insects to birdsong and the purring of cats\, are directly medicinal and their presence can heal the pain of loneliness. Animals\, including donkeys\, can be natural therapists for the hurt psyche\, alleviating trauma\, fear and depression. \nIn this original\, revelatory and exuberant book\, Jay Griffiths explores how animals can have a role in every level of healing\, from the individual to the collective\, guiding us in how we might create societies that are healthier\, fairer and kinder. Wolves may be teachers of ethics; monkeys and dogs can object to unfairness and bees take collective decisions. Animals are irresistible medicine for a healthy culture\, animating the arts with spectacular vitality and verve\, as poetry knows.

SUMMARY:An evening with... Tristan Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the publication of Tristan Hughes’ new book\, Boundary Waters. Tristan Hughes will be in conversation with writer Tyler Keevil and there will be the opportunity to ask questions and get your books signed. Organised in partnership with Parthian Books\, tickets to this book launch include a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink. \n“Hughes has produced a gripping yarn\, vividly bringing the harsh realities of the fur trade to life\, in this epic tale of fortune-seeking and ill-starred love.” – Kate Pullinger \nAbout Boundary Waters\nLower Canada\, 1804. Arthur Stanton\, lacking direction in his life and desperately seeking the approval of his father\, wanders the streets of Montreal filled with daydreams of exotic lands and adventures inspired by novels and traveller’s tales. On a sudden whim he decides to sign up as a clerk in the fur trade and is sent on a mission to recover a cache of furs obtained from a secret beaver El Dorado. Accompanied by a down-at-heel band of voyageurs\, led by a disgraced and drunken trader\, he embarks on a journey by birchbark canoe into the northern wilderness. \nPaddling from Lachine to Lake Superior\, and then across the unresolved border between Canada and the United States\, Arthur’s travels will take him into a series of baffling new worlds\, where he will prove himself to be hapless in trade\, hopeless in love\, and terrified of the landscapes and peoples that surround him. Stumbling from one mishap into another\, he will at last fall into disaster\, seemingly betray his friends and companions\, and have to begin a quest to set things right. \nSet amongst the starkly beautiful landscapes of the upper great lakes during an era of blurred and shifting boundaries between nations and cultures\, where nothing is certain and misapprehensions can be fatal\, Arthur’s journey becomes a tragicomic tale of love\, loss and redemption. \nAbout Tristan Hughes\nTristan Hughes was born in Atikokan in northern Ontario and brought up on the Welsh island of Ynys Mon. He is the author of four novels\, Send My Cold Bones Home\, Revenant\, Eye Lake and Hummingbird – which won the Edward Stanford Award for Fiction with a Sense of Place and the Wales Book of Year People’s Choice Award – as well as a collection of linked short stories\, The Tower. His short fiction has appeared in various journals\, including Ploughshares\, The Southern Review\, and New Welsh Review. He is a winner of the Rhys Davies short story prize and an O. But underneath the surface\, a whirlwind was at play – a struggle with sadness\, concentration\, self-doubt and near-constant anxiety. But then he discovered he had all the hallmarks of ADHD and his stumbling blocks became stepping stones. \nIn Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal\, Robin uses his own experiences to explore the neurodivergent experience and to ask what the point of “being normal” really is. Packed with personal insights\, intimate anecdotes and interviews with psychologists\, neuroscientists and many neurodivergent people he has met along the way\, this is a quirky and witty dive into the world of human behaviour.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED An evening with... Dan Richards
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances this event is unfortunately cancelled. \nJoin us for an evening with Sunday Times bestselling author Dan Richards to discuss his book Overnight – an exploration of the night\, the nocturnal world\, insomnia\, the creative potential of the dark hours\, and the work that happens at night to keep the modern world moving. All tickets include a glass of wine or a soft drink and there will be the opportunity to get your book signed too. \nAbout Overnight\nThere is something special about the night. For many\, just the idea of it conjures thoughts of starlit skies\, romance\, refuge\, of being tucked up in bed. For some\, the night means fear\, vulnerability\, danger\, sleeplessness. In Overnight\, Dan takes a series of personal journeys where he explores what the night means to an array of people. From night terrors and insomnia\, parenthood during the early hours of the morning and the men and woman of emergency services to the endurance car race at 24 Heures du Mans and dawn on the summer solstice\, Dan endeavours to explain the uniqueness of night time. For others still\, nightfall signals the start of work. Dan endeavours to change the way we all think about the hours after dark. Visiting bats and looking at the stars\, we are taken on a journey\, travelling by ship\, train\, racing car and foot. Celebrating all things nocturnal\, those who labour while the rest of us sleep: the bakers\, health workers\, sailors\, couriers\, broadcasters\, drivers\, fishers as well as nocturnal animals\, even learning what the Moomintroll has to teach us about insomnia – Overnight is a hymn to life after dark. \nAbout Dan Richards\nDan Richards is the co-author of Holloway (with Robert Macfarlane and Stanley Donwood)\, and the author of The Beechwood Airship Interviews\, Climbing Days\, Outpost and Overnight. Only After Dark\, a BBC Radio 4 series about the nocturnal world\, was broadcast to acclaim in 2022. Dan has written for the Guardian\, Economist\, Esquire and Monocle. He is based in Edinburgh.
