Kevin Walker is a well-known local writer, landscape photographer and mountain addict, who has been closely associated with the Brecon Beacons National Park for over 30 years.

Although now living a few miles away, he is a past resident of Crickhowell, and his roots are firmly in the area.
His first book, Mountain Navigation Techniques, was published by Constable in 1986. This soon became regarded as a standard work, and was quickly followed by two companion volumes, Mountain Hazards and Wild Country Camping. Several more books followed, including the profusely illustrated Learn Rock Climbing in a Weekend, which was published worldwide and translated into several languages including French and Italian. His most recent “how to” books include The Essential Hillwalkers Guide, and Navigation – Finding Your Way on Mountain & Moorland.
His latest book, Undiscovered Wales, is published by Frances Lincoln, and marks something of a new direction, capturing some of Kevin’s wide experience of tramping the Welsh Hills with an insatiable curiousity for the strange and unusual, and an enquiring mind. More than just a walking guidebook, this well-illustrated volume leads the reader through not only the landscape, but also the heritage of Wales, bringing the surroundings to life with myth and legend, past lives and long forgotten tales. He is currently working on further books in the same vein, including Strange Wales, a book of short walks visiting peculiar places.
Kevin also writes and publishes affordable local guidebooks under the banner Heritage Guides, and is a regular contributor to the outdoor press, particularly TGO magazine, for whom he contributes both hill-skills articles and longer descriptive features about the Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Hills in general.
In addition to his writing and photography, Kevin runs guided walks, hill skills courses and walking breaks, many of which are based from The Bear Hotel in Crickhowell (which he regards as his local).
When he has any free time (which is seldom) he spends it doing more of the same… exploring, photographing and writing about the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, with occasional trips to further flung hills.
